English for Driver's Exam

Build the English needed to study New Jersey driving rules and prepare for the written knowledge exam. Two sequential courses move from essential signs and vocabulary to realistic question wording, scenarios, and independent practice.

Two-course progression

Start with the language of signs and simple rules. Build toward independent exam practice.

Driver's Exam English I builds a practical foundation. Driver's Exam English II develops the reading comprehension and question strategies needed for more realistic written-exam preparation.

Driver's Exam English I

Build a foundation in signs, driving vocabulary, and simple rule sentences.

Course overview

This course introduces the English most often needed at the beginning of written-exam study. You will learn common road signs, colors, shapes, arrows, driving verbs, directions, lane and intersection language, safety responsibilities, parking rules, license documents, basic vehicle words, and simple test instructions.

What you will practice

Practical exam English

Signs and essential vocabulary

Numbers, dates, addresses, spelling, and basic test-room language.
Colors, shapes, arrows, symbols, and verbs such as stop, turn, pass, yield, and park.
Warning, regulatory, direction, and information signs.
Vehicle parts, license documents, and location words.

Simple rules and safe-driving language

Lanes, turns, passing, intersections, traffic lights, signals, and right-of-way.
Pedestrians, school zones, buses, emergency vehicles, and safety responsibilities.
Parking and stopping rules explained in short, accessible sentences.
Supported sign, vocabulary, and rule questions with review of mistakes.

Driver's Exam English II

Develop reading comprehension and independence for realistic exam preparation.

Primary focus: Rule-based reading and test-taking independence

Course overview

This course develops the English needed to interpret written-exam questions and apply driving rules to scenarios. You will work with question words, negatives, exceptions, quantities, comparisons, speed and distance information, road conditions, impairment and distraction, safety equipment, emergencies, driver responsibilities, restrictions, and violations.

Reading rules and scenarios

Question words, negatives, exceptions, quantities, comparisons, and test directions.
Right-of-way, turns, lane use, passing, merging, speed, distance, and space management.

Alcohol, medication, fatigue, distraction, and safety-consequence language.

Independent practice strategies

Seat belts, child restraints, vehicle equipment, crashes, breakdowns, and emergencies.
Documents, restrictions, violations, and driver responsibilities.
Strategies for studying the NJ Driver Manual and answering multiple-choice questions.
Timed mixed practice, error review, weak-area repair, and an individual study plan.
